Independent Electricity System Operator
A user-centred redesign of IESO’s market dashboard

Scope
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is essential in Ontario’s electricity sector, overseeing power system operations, planning for future energy demands, and facilitating market development.
Challenge
As part of its Market Renewal Program (MRP), the IESO shifted from a single provincial energy price to locational marginal pricing. This change required a redesign of its public-facing power data dashboard and internal control room displays. Q30 was engaged to validate the business requirements, conduct user research, and design an interface capable of communicating this more complex data model.
Process
We conducted interviews, usability tests, and interactive prototype sessions with both internal and external users. These activities helped us assess business requirements, refine workflows, and improve data comprehension. Our iterative UI and interaction design focused on simplifying complex content using intuitive layouts, filters, and time-based visualizations. We utilized colour-coded chloropleth maps to effectively communicate zonal price differences. To ensure accessibility and performance, we aligned our visual design with IESO’s technical stack, incorporating Sitecore and HighCharts.
Outcome
The final recommendations validated key business requirements, simplified implementation, and enhanced usability, transforming a complex regulatory update into a clear, actionable experience for IESO stakeholders.
